Welcome to the home of the Atlantic European Climate Group at the University of Reading.

We are a part of NCAS Climate .

Our aims are:
To understand the causes of climate variations and climate change in the Atlantic/European region
To determine the extent to which the climate of the Atlantic/European region is predictable.
To understand the role of the Atlantic Ocean in the global climate system

Use the menu to the left to find out more.

Current SST Fields for the Atlantic Sector from Reynolds Data.

Fig 1
Atlantic SST field for week centred
on Wed-Jul-20-2011

Fig 2
Atlantic SST anomalies for week centred
on Wed-Jul-20-2011

Fig 3
The Atlantic SST Anomalies for Wed-Jul-20-2011 and
the three preceeding weeks

Fig 4
The Atlantic SST Anomalies for Wed-Jul-20-2011 and
the three preceeding weeks scaled by the local standard deviation.
Notes:
  1. The SST anomalies in Fig 2 were calculated from the weekly SST field minus the climatology for the month which the week lies in.
  2. The 'Monthly Anomalies' in Fig 3 were calculated by Averaging the last three weeks sst fields together with the current field (Fig 1) and subtracting the monthly climatological SST field for the month in which the majority of the weeks lay in.
  3. Fig 4 is as Fig 3 but each point has been divided by the standard deviation of the SST at that point for a given Month between the years 1981 and 2000. The Month was chosen in the same way as in note 3.

These plots were created using Reynolds SST data provided by the NOAA-CIRES Climate Diagnostics Center, Boulder, Colorado, USA together with Ferret V5.22.
